More than just a hockey coachMark Carrell is a well-known identity on the Rodney College campus. Be in the company of this ex-policeman at the school and the respect he receives from students is obvious.
Mark has recently been named as a Sport Northland Sport Maker for his work at the school in the code of hockey. Like a lot of coaches at secondary school level, Mark initially got involved because his sons attended the school. It’s now over 10 years later and Mark does more than just coach. Rodney College sport coordinator Maria Northin is quick to acknowledge the enormous amount of time and effort that Mark invests in their students and was the person behind his nomination. Last year Mark helped his team fundraise for a trip to France, attending the first International Youth Hockey Tournament, held in commemoration of WWI. “Kids in sport stay out of court” is Mark’s belief, and he says he’s inspired by the looks on their faces when they achieve. Mark has kept up with the times and no longer just sends texts. He knows the benefits of social media, particularly Facebook: “It’s the only thing they read,” he says. Rodney College acknowledged Mark at a full school assembly. Mark is pictured with Sport Northland regional sports director Robyn Richards. |
