Youth development voyages for studentsNorthland’s tall ship the R. Tucker Thompson has scheduled a total of 16 voyages for the coming winter, providing the opportunity for a total of 192 places for young people in the Northland region to take part in the voyage of a lifetime.
A number of the voyages have already been tagged for specific purposes, with Top Energy and Northpower confirming their sponsorship of the sixth Tai Tokerau Challenge voyage again in early May, a challenge voyage which is open to all schools in the region. Students in teams of two need to submit an item (essay, video, poem, picture or story) which illustrates the topic “Safety at Sea” – the more creative the better. New this year, the Trust is introducing at least one voyage where sail trainees can complete NZQA Keel Boat unit standards 21930 and 21931 on board during their 7-day experience, providing NCEA credits for the students concerned. Students interesting in registering for this voyage should contact Sophie Camplin on youth@tucker.co.nz as soon as possible. Depending on demand, additional voyages with credits may be introduced. The Trust is asking students to complete a registration of interest form even if they do not have funding or a specific voyage date in mind. That way they can be notified when places as well as funding becomes available. Application forms and registration of interest forms, including the Tai Tokerau Challenge entry form are available from the R. Tucker Thompson website tucker.co.nz/youth-voyages/sail_training/ or emailing youth@tucker.co.nz or by phoning 0800 TUCKER. <<ends>> TALL SHIP: Students climb rigging to develop confidence. |
