Locals go headfirst into fundraiserUp to 200 tradesmen and customers from far and wide headed to Warkworth Mitre 10 Mega last Thursday to enjoy a hearty – and free – trade breakfast, put on by the company. However, there was some method to the madness as attendees were asked, nudged and cajoled into buying raffle tickets, making donations or getting their heads shaved as a part of the fundraiser for the New Zealand Prostate Cancer Foundation. Local legend Jack Milham had grown and nursed his goatee for 42 years but a pledge of $2,000 by managing director Cam Caithness coaxed him to front up and succumb to the clippers. Several other employees fronted up to the encouragement of the crowd who also heard a sobering address of the necessity for men, especially older men, to undergo regular checks for detection of any symptoms which might lead to the disease. Broadcasting personality Clint Brown from Times FM was the MC for the event and was also among those to have his head shaved. Total proceeds from Mitre 10 Mega Warkworth and the community was $3,449.72 raised for this worthy cause. |
