Rebrand for sister stationMangawhai's Smooth Jazz FM is now The Wireless 88.1FM. Station owner-manager, Mark Perry, has changed the format of the small low power radio station to a blend of nostalgic music from the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s, plus some more recent contemporary favourites. “Those of us who remember when the wireless was the radio in the household rather than a cable free modem will really appreciate this mix of music,” Perry quipped. “Our research showed that, although locals knew there was a smooth jazz station in town, only 3 percent of people actually had tuned in. That's a good figure if you're operating in New York or London, but not realistic with our small population.” According to the latest census, the majority of residents in Mangawhai are over 55 years of age, and Perry believes he will be serving listeners with a better music programme, as well as providing advertisers with another market to reach. The Wireless FM is broadcast locally on 88.1FM and streaming to the world via the internet through the station's Facebook page or Tunein.com, tunein.com/radio/The-Wireless-881FM-s205019. The Wireless FM is the sister station of Heads 106.4FM and both stations will run the same community messages free of charge for all non-profit and charity events.
