Tracks trust proposes Mangawhai BoardwalkThe advancement of a round the harbour walkway, repeatedly advocated and supported by the Mangawhai community, has been given additional impetus by the opening of the Te Araroa Trail which currently passes down Molesworth Drive between the Heads and the Village. The rerouting of the section of the Trail between the information centre and the bottom of Moir Street would greatly enhance the walking experience. This could be achieved by incorporating the Last of the Summer Wine track in Mangawhai Park, exiting onto Molesworth Drive at the Museum, crossing the causeway and entering the Back Bay walkway. Back Bay walkway The Back Bay walkway has only been maintained where it adjoins the Back Bay subdivision, through the efforts of the property owners. Despite this walkway being entirely on public land Council has provided no maintenance such that the first 200m of the walkway is overgrown and wet, it needs clearing and graveling and a boardwalk constructed. The public walkway terminates at the Back Bay jetty, the path beyond which is on private land. Boardwalk options It is proposed to extend the Back Bay walkway from the Back Bay jetty to the Pearson Street reserve by way of a boardwalk through the mangroves and either across the open sand flats (Option 1) or continuing up the inlet and joining part way along the Pearson Street esplanade reserve (Option 2). No part of this area is currently subject to mangrove removal. The Option 1 boardwalk would be approximately 500m in length and would originate part way out the Back Bay jetty and proceed through the outer reaches of the mangroves. The boardwalk would not require handrails along most of its length which would be less than 1m above the sand/mud surface. However, an arch bridge would provide small craft access into the tidal inlet at the Pearson Street end and would require hand rails. The Option 2 boardwalk would similarly extend from the Back Bay jetty along the mangrove edge towards Pearson St., but instead of crossing the tidal channel, it would extend further south up the Kainui St. arm before crossing and joining the esplanade reserve. Affected property owners will be consulted but any comments from the wider community are welcome and should be sent to: Gordon Hosking, PO Box 169, Mangawhai 0540 or email gordon.hosking@xtra.co.nz. |
