Trap shooters give it both barrelsOtamatea High School, already noted for the variety of sports it offers pupils has this year added another to its repertoire: clay bird and trap shooting. New physical education teacher Bruce Alison is a keen shooter and could see there was potential among the senior students in the school to form a shooting team to compete around Northland against other secondary schools. “We have had little practice as a team but have managed to get to Cameron Shanks’s farm for an afternoon practice and have joined the Whangarei Gun Club at Mangapai to give the boys an afternoon practice there also,”says Bruce. “We are very lucky to have got great sponsorship from Carters at Maungaturoto and Farmlands from Wellsford and as a team would like to thank Mike from Carters and Vanessa from Farmlands for their generous support and helping the boys look smart and tidy at their competition shoots.” The school has been able to field two teams, one of five boys and the other of four with Bryce Lupton and Phil Cotching along with Treena McCarroll as parent help. There are five competitions: Kaeo, Kaitaia, Kaikohe, Dargaville and Whangarei, culminating in a New Zealand championship event later in the year. After nerves and settling in at the first competition shoot at Kaeo in April, the experience then helped the team to third placing at the next event in Kaitaia.
