Big snapper bite early at compOnce again there were good entries for Mangawhai’s first fishing competition of the summer held by Mangawhai Boating and Fishing Club over Labour Weekend.
In the absence of an auction there was not so much public interest, but fishermen and women are never short of enthusiasm and there were a number of handy snapper caught at and above the 4kg mark along with some nice meaty kingis. Tony Orton and Bea Bagnall had their own little competition in the kingfish department, Tony landing one at 16.02kg and diminutive Bea doing a great job to land another at 14.8kg. Wayne Tarry weighed in a very handy 7.8kg snapper but was well headed off by Shane Hayes (pictured) whose 10.6kg beauty was the premium winner on the day. Main results: Open Seniors, Snapper, 1 Shane Hayes 10.625kg, Kahawai (none weighed), Kingfish 1Tony Orton 16.02kg. Open Juniors, Snapper, 1 Van Grooby 3.075kg, Kahawai 1 Joshua Davies 1.2kg. |
