Did you Know..........Musical Mangawhai
Over the past month we have enjoyed the Spring Festival of Song from the Mangawhai Singers, Local Vocal concerts in Wellsford and Kaiwaka, a musical soiree in the Village Hall, and now, Mangawhai Music Makers. Initiated by well-known performers, Maura and Peter Flower, an invitation is extended to all who like to entertain, or be entertained, to come along to Sail Rock Cafe on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm, put $2 in the Music Makers kitty and share in the fun. Just come along with one or two numbers, put your name up on the blackboard and wait your turn. Poetry, dance, magic? It's a great opportunity to practise performing in front of a small, supportive audience. The November evening showed what pleasure can be had from spreading music. Margaret Fish is an attentive host, so make an evening of it with a meal and glass of wine. Looking forward to December 3. Holiday boom for MAZ Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ) was a popular place to be over the school holidays and Labour Weekend. The playground equipment is well-patronised by young families, along with the skateboard bowls, courts, bike trails and walking tracks. MAZ Charitable trust members and volunteers are to be commended for the tremendous amount of work and time they put in to developing this area, along with the support of many local businesses whose latest contribution is always acknowledged on the roadside blackboard. Thanks to tidy Kiwis Have been noticing a number of people making a concentrated effort to pick up roadside rubbish as they are out walking. Thank you to those people who take pride in our community – just a shame that someone throws it out in the first place. And on the perennial subject of rubbish (always someone else's of course!) Mangawhai kerbside collection is MONDAY, regardless of whether it is a holiday weekend. Amazing the number of excuses people have for putting it out at some other time. Flower power celebrated Friday November 15 will bring a bustling day in the Village Hall as it is the Mangawhai Women's Institute Floral and Craft Show, an annual event for well over 50 years. These shows are very much treasured in small rural communities, so pay your $3 admission fee (includes afternoon tea) and view the work of young and old. Doors open at 12.30pm. Everything from floral art to photography on show. Charlene impresses judges Mangawhai Zonta 'Spirit of Adventure' scholarship has this year been awarded to Rodney College student, 17-year-old Charlene Kahotea-Smith. A merit scholar with excellent skills in Maori and music, she currently has a position as prefect of cultural leadership on the Student Council and in kapa haka. Zonta president Sue Poynter said Charlene is very community-minded and generous in sharing her talents with younger students, impressing the panel with her independence, perseverance, positive attitude and generous spirit. Charlene is planning on embarking on a Bachelor of Commerce degree next year and is interested in a career in marketing management. Riders return Five years ago, Sherrill and Murray Glen's daughter Toni married Iain Morris in a ceremony on Mangawhai Heads beach. This adventurous couple, who have been working overseas, are passionate about motorcycling, doing an 80 day Globebusters Tour on their BMW 1200 from London to Beijing earlier in the year. They are heading back to Mangawhai to live, travelling overland on the motorbike whenever they can, and you can follow their journey, tales fom the road, on cuentosdelcamino.wordpress.com. On Saturday November 23 they plan to ride in to Mangawhai between 2 -2.15pm, so family and friends will be gathering outside the school to give them a very special welcome. Bookings essential Beaujolais nouveau est arrive ... yes, it is that special time of year again at the Frog & Kiwi, with a four course set menu ($71) on Thursday November 21 and again on Saturday 23. Bookings, as always, are essential, 431 4439. Gala raises record All those associated with the big Agriculture and Gala Day for Mangawhai Beach School are thrilled with the community response. Around $30,000 was raised, and in return a great deal of fun was had by all who attended. Calves and lambs, kune kune and goats, pony rides, tractor rides, rural activites, raffles, entertainment and much much more. Quite a day! We are justifiably proud of the school and the pupils, and this record boost to their funds benefits us all. Dressmaker does it all Did you know we now have a professional dressmaker in Mangawhai? Corinne Te Whata and family have recently moved from Ruawai, and she is working from their property on Insley St. She can do everything, from pattern draughting to alterations, repairs, wedding dresses, plus she has award-winning garments on display at Te Papa. Calling in after seeing her new sign, I discovered that her mother had made my wedding dress. Small world! Phone 431 3245 or 0274 179 099.
