Foot-tapping fun at hall fundraiserA very happy audience was left highly entertained and wanting more following the last musical act at the recent inaugural fundraising concert for the Mangawhai Library Hall.
Despite other activities on in Mangawhai on a beautiful Sunday afternoon when the concert was held, over 50 people were attracted by the prospect of seeing and hearing a range of talented locals perform in the historic hall venue – all for a worthy cause. Goodwill prevailed, wine was available, nibbles were provided and a rollicking time was had by all – some commenting the event should happen every six months. On stage, groups and individuals contributed their time and their talent. Organisers are grateful to them all – too many to mention here – but pay tribute to Denis Newhook and the harmonious and enthusiastic Local Vocals choir, Summer Sweeney (the youngest performer who almost stole the show), Alan Preston, whose expert guitar-playing accompanied several soloists, Jenny McShane (for her lovely singing and flower arrangements) and Otherwise Fine from Paparoa who wrapped up the show with the audience still asking for more. Jo Roberts was a popular emcee, sharing her knowledge of the hall’s long history as she co-ordinated the event and performers changed places. Other support (including the loan of chairs) came from the Kaiwaka Sports Centre, and local retailers Kaiwaka Cheese Shop, Mangawhai Butchery, and Mangawhai Books & Gifts who were all generous in their backing. Ticket sales, a raffle and donations raised approximately $700 after costs, to go towards new chairs for the hall. The maintenance and running of the building is an ongoing concern, and as a consequence the Hall Committee is extremely grateful to all those who performed, who came and enjoyed themselves, and who gave generously to the cause. Following up the suggestion mentioned earlier, organisers hope to hold a similar event in the not-too-distant future. |
