Mangawhai Probus Club

Child mobility project needs funds
Gaylene Lawrence was the first speaker at the October Probus meeting and gave a brief talk on the Lions Club’s NZ Child Mobility Foundation, a project that she has become involved with. The Foundation provides and funds the Hart Walker, a hands-free mobility frame for children with Cerebral Palsy, or like conditions.

The frame was invented by David Hart, a medical engineer from England and is supplied to New Zealand children through the Cerebral Palsy Alliance in Sydney. Children are assessed and fitted by a medical team and Lions Clubs source funding and run the clinics for fitting and adjustments as the children grow.

The Hart Walker does not receive government funding therefore the Foundation is always looking for philanthropic people and organisations to assist. They also work with the Cerebral Palsy Society who provide many services for children and families who are affected by Cerebral Palsy. Lions second career for Ron
Second speaker was Ron Lawrence, who spoke on his 36 year career in commercial radio and around 30 years as a Lions member, the last 15 as CEO of Lions Clubs, based in Wellington.

Ron’s radio career was mainly in programming, announcing and management. At 15 he left school and joined radio station 2XP in New Plymouth and began a wonderful, magical career.

He outlined the start of radio in New Zealand and took us down memory lane with stories of some of the people he worked with, the radio serials, and the personalities.

Ron became an announcer in 1963 in Wanganui.

He also worked with radio stars such as Selwyn Toogood, John Maybury, Paddy O’Donnell, Relda Familton and Paul Holmes.

His second career kicked in when he retired from radio. He had joined a Lions Club in Palmerston North in the early 80’s, became a District Governor in 1991 and then took over the running of the national office in Wellington in the mid 90’s. He and Gaylene have been to 15 annual international conventions in different cities around the world, hosted 14 International Presidents and met some wonderful people along the way.

He was very involved in 2005 when Lions celebrated 50 years of service in New Zealand. All in all a wonderful time working with lots of people over the years who just want to make their own communities that much better through fun and voluntary service.
