News in Brief

Thanks says Libby
Candidate Libby Jones was disappointed not to be re-elected to the Northland District Health Board this time, but offers sincere thanks to everyone who voted for her and supported her in her campaign. She has found the experience of being a director on the board extremely rewarding, and says she enjoyed having the opportunity to assist with improving the health of Northlanders.

Quilters on show
Don’t forget, Otamatea Quilters are holding their 29th annual quilt show at The Kauri Museum from October 22 to November 24. The exhibition showcases the craft of patchwork and quilting carried out by a group of very enthusiastic ladies from Ruawai, Paparoa and Maungaturoto. Every year group members create a quilt to raffle for local charity. This year proceeds will go to North Kaipara Coast Guard. The much-anticipated and admired exhibition has become an annual event seen by many museum visitor from around the world. Some of the quilts and other handiwork are for sale.

Patrol season heats up
Surf Life Saving officially launched summer from Labour Weekend with volunteer lifeguards out in force. Traditionally, weekend patrols begin at Labour Weekend and continue through to Easter for most areas of the North Island. In other parts of the country, patrols will begin as the warmer weather arrives.

Last year, Surf Life Saving New Zealand launched its summer patrol season with an innovative new website that makes finding the right beach easy. Find a Beach is a live, interactive website that features up-to-the-minute information including weather, swells, hazards and even a rating system for activities such as swimming, fishing, or if a beach is family friendly and what facilities are available. Check out www.findabeach.co.nz.

Speech title for student
At an assembly last week, Rodney College student Bryce Robertson was presented with the Risworth Cup which he won as the top secondary school speech-maker from throughout Northland. Continuing a fine school tradition, Bryce is the twelfth Rodney College student to win this trophy – the next highest school having eight winners.
