Old Boys held in check by Rodney CollegeThe annual Rodney College versus Old Boys rugby game was played on October 30 during lunchtime in front of a full school.
Rodney College First XV set the scene with a rousing haka to the Old Boys who fielded a mix of two All Blacks (Rene Ranger and Glen Osborne), current senior players, several parents and teacher Tom De Haan. Right from the start the Old Boys showed their desire to move the ball around with Ranger and Ian Neil creating gaps, and some bullocking runs by big forwards like Buddha Connolly. This set the scene as they scored early, putting pressure on the college team. The students fought gamely against the bigger and more experienced opposition and were lead well by senior players Mana William and Cameron Farr. The backline showed a high skill level and were prepared to challenge the Old Boys defence. Fast flowing rugby lead to a high scoring game with both sides scoring plenty of tries, Old Boys coming out on top 42-31. A long-time supporter of local rugby, Ranger now heads to club rugby in France. BIG HITS: Rene Ranger about to get some attention from a Rodney College tackler. |
