Record profit reward for effortFriends and supporters of Mangawhai Beach School can give themselves a big pat on the back for their efforts, again pulling off another big fundraising coup. Of course it’s also a big thanks to the out-of-town visitors who front up year upon year to enjoy the fun and frolics where town and country meet.
What this school lacks in size it certainly makes up in enthusiasm with the whole school getting involved in the musical presentations, including principal Aaron Kemp and his guitar prowess, and organising and presenting all the animal and field events, and the rec centre filled with fruit and vegetable displays of all shapes and sizes. City kids loved getting up close and personal with the calves and lambs and the Kunekune pigs paid little attention to those who were able to pat and scratch their bristly backs oblivious to the attention, more intent on gobbling up their lunch of apples. Big green monsters and bouncy castles kept the little monsters entertained. Miss Fletcher soon found out who were her best friends when she took her place on the dunking chair. James Reid from noted rock group The Feelers was in town and took to the stage for a couple of numbers to the delight of the crowd and local lass Molly Curnow, a regular face among actors and singers in the Otamatea Rep Theatre, entertained the crowd with some light-hearted numbers. Not surprisingly food and beverage outlets did a roaring trade. While the blustery easterly may have kept some away from the beach for most of Saturday, many who attended thought the organisation was better than ever and the crowd happily supported the annual fundraiser through their pockets to the tune of an almost $30,000 profit. Well done MBS! DYNAMIC DUO: Ribbons are just part of the fun for this gala day student and her friend.
