Winery earns first export orderLochiel Estate has shipped its 2012 gold medal-winning chardonnay into Sydney with the wine due to arrive in the first week of November. Most of it is to be sold into an upmarket wine bar/restaurant which is owned by a leading Sydney Sommelier.
“We have planned to sell limited quantities of chardonnay in Australia as part of our marketing strategy as we know there is a niche for full flavoured and oaked NZ chardonnay in the Australian market,” say vintners Gary and Liz Cameron. “However we have had limited volumes available in 2010 and 2011 but with the new plantings coming on last year, we have finally been able to commit to this export.” “Our son Rob, with his Invivo brand, has been exporting to Australia for some years and his sales agent, who has been here and tried several vintages of our chardonnay, has been very keen to buy from us.” Gary said the deal was arranged earlier this year whilst visiting Sydney for an Army reunion celebration including marching in the Anzac Day parade. “We met with our agent over lunch on the Friday and sorted out the details. As it turned out, winning the gold medal was the icing on the cake.” Whilst they see this as a long term market opportunity, quantities will be limited as they are committed to looking after their New Zealand customers as a priority. |
