New outlet for local art and craftThe local area is dotted with arty and crafty people. One such person is Jenny Chellew. With a long interest in crochet work, Jenny has seen and envied some of the works displayed at markets on occasions but was concerned there was no local outlet for the variety of crafts being so lovingly created. Fourteen years ago as a newcomer to Kaiwaka, she started Jenny’s Cleaning Services. Now, as if she doesn’t already have enough to do, she has decided to open her own craft shop. Husband Bill, a DIY specialist and handyman, has planned, built and fitted out Jenny’s Craft Shop on the Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Rd. Open Wednesday to Sunday, Jenny sells all manner of goodies made predominantly by locals, including knitted or crocheted tissue holders, teapot cosies, cellphone covers, soft toys and ba-bywear. But the range certainly doesn’t stop there. Depicting the Mangawhai-Kaiwaka coastal and farming scenes are themed coasters and placemats, dried flower arrangements, organic and beautifully decorated cushions, plus a variety of pottery, Kauri woodwork and even jewellery. You may even spy some pre-loved recycled goodies, and with that special time of the year fast approaching, this could be a good stop for those extra little stocking fillers, either practical or simply ornamental. Jenny is keen to source more goods from local craftspeople which she sells on behalf. “I’m starting small,” says Jenny “but I have lots of ideas on things I can stock and room for future expansion when required.” |
