Local band making a hit

Haze group pic(copy)A school band formed earlier this year, Haze consists of budding Rodney College muso’s Mitch Levet (lead guitar and vocals), Leah Mainland (bass guitar), Jakob Young (lead guitar), and Otamatea High’s Jim Bokma (vocals and drums).

Former Mangawhai Beach School pupil Jakob has been playing guitar for eight years while Leah hails from Kaiwaka.

Playing classic rock and some originals the group made the Smokefree Rockquest Finals in Whangarei in July and just last week won the Warkworth RSA Talent Show collecting a total of $2,000 in prizemoney – a big win for these 15 and 16-year-olds.

They faced some serious opposition including second-placed Lulu who is opening for the Lynnard Skynard /10CC/ Jefferson Starship bash at Matakana in February.

With much of their repertoire styled on rock legends Pink Floyd and ZZ Top, Haze are keen to play whenever the opportunity arises, having played at La Padella in Wellsford, private functions, Mangawahi Beach School Ag Day, Wellsford Tavern and at the Wellsford Show last Saturday.

It’s a big learning curve says the band, but shows they are talented young local musicians intent on making a name for themselves in a very competitive industry.
