Ed Said - The beat (up) goes on

The same old arguments are rising to the top, the latest revived by the article in last week’s Sunday Star Times. But while it might give another perspective to the trail of events leading to the Kaipara’s $80m debt, it doesn’t bring out anything new.

Gardening with Gael - Whats eating my geraniums

With the sale of half the cottages I have developed a very cavalier attitude to the rest of them. I glance at the reservations, check the phone and decide if nothing is imminent I will flee to The Block.

Garden Ramble - Gardeners not full time but still permanant

It’s difficult to ascertain when one becomes a bona fide Mangawhai-ian but having recently celebrated 10 years of owning their property in Gumdiggers Lane, Liz and Murray Smith now probably qualify.

Courses help contribute to community

Tim Magill of Barnbuilders, Kaiwaka, say Work Camp courses he has set up in partnership with NorthTec are currently exceeding expectations in popularity and attendance.

Currently running a carpentry and painting module beside La Nonna Bakery in Kaiwaka, and a sustainable rural development course at the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall, half way through the semester the training is already contributing to the local community.

Range of styles reflects passion for art

Mangawhai artist Wendy Clifford cannot remember a time when she did not have a pencil, paint brush, or pastel in her hand to carry out her artistic endeavors. Over the years her love of drawing has lead her into print making, wood and lino cuts and mono printing (as seen above).

Spring planting rejuvenates distal spit

For the ‘distal spit’ – that great bank of sand that protects Mangawhai Heads from the ravages of the open ocean – to remain viable, ongoing planting, replanting and sand-fence maintenance is required. Most local people understand this and their huge support on the recent planting days is testament to that.
