Airman flies into sunsetMangawhai notes with respect the passing of Mangawhai identity Charles Cooke (pictured with wife Betty on ANZAC Day) in Whangarei last Saturday, October 12.
A retired squadron leader, Mr Cooke was known for his love of planes and flying, for his participation and dedication in local, regional and national RSA activities and the many roles he had played in supporting positions. A Queen’s Service Medal announcement earlier in the year was fitting reward for his services to the Royal New Zealand Returned Services Association Affiliates Forum. Deteriorating health due to terminal illness saw Mr Cooke pinned with his QSM insignia at a special and moving ceremony earlier this month at Radius Rimu Court Rest Home in Whangarei. As well as president and executive committee roles with the King's Empire Veterans he was also national secretary for the Royal New Zealand Air Force Association and Air force Liaison Officer, and was often the ‘go to’ man when things needed to be done within his chosen movements. He was also on the governing board of the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland for many years. Condolences go to wife Betty and the family. |
