Courses help to contribute to community

Tim Magill of Barnbuilders, Kaiwaka, say Work Camp courses he has set up in partnership with NorthTec are currently exceeding expectations in popularity and attendance.

Currently running a carpentry and painting module beside La Nonna Bakery in Kaiwaka, and a sustainable rural development course at the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall, half way through the semester the training is already contributing to the local community.

The Kaiwaka and Maungaturoto halls plus local marae and kohunga reo have either had work carried out or are on the drawing board. Recipients of this work purchase materials and it gives trainees real life experience.

“We are lucky to have very good locals who love their chosen interests and are both skilled at tutoring and generous enough to give up a Wednesday night and share this information,” say Tim Magill. “We see the theme working around employment, life skills and survival.”

To date there have been three firearms safety workshops with Graeme Stevenson taking attendees through the theory section of licensing. Some group hunts for goats and a butchery skills workshop are stemming from this. The mid-October course will also cover bushcraft survival.

Tutor Adrian Bonner recently made a big impression with his experiences as a beekeeper. Adrian has much to share in his chosen field. Again, if numbers demand there will be another of these courses in the future.

An evening of bone and wood carving instruction by Elliott Freer was also well attended and just a gold coin donation makes these evenings affordable.

Drivers licenses are another important qualification and an almost essential aid for employment. Qualified instructors are on hand to take a group through. Later this month around 20 mostly young locals will sit their learners after some professional coaching. Fees, ID and registration are made easy. Restricted and full practical tests are next.
