Museum development continuesGiven Mangawhai’s relationship with the sea, as part of the museum’s ongoing landscaping a ‘boat garden’ is being laid out just inside the complex at the Thelma Rd entrance. As construction proceeds the ballards of typically aged and weathered hardwood timbers will be easily visible as the end of the wharfe. Organiser Sharon McLean says the contour will run in waves, be punctuated by rocks and aged swamp Kauri logs and any sailing craft unwanted and suited to the display.
“We are interested to hear from any locals who may have boats or artefacts that may depict past water-based activity connected to Mangawhai who might donate pieces for the display,”says Sharon. In true community spirit, John and Damien Cullen of Mangawhai Handy Guys and the Orang Otang team have donated, carted and set up a lot of the woodwork, rockeries and mulch to get the garden established. It should attract plenty of comment and interest as it grows towards completion. |
