Helping hands and hearts needed by hospiceDid you know Whangarei’s North Haven Hospice looks after patients in the Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, and Maungaturoto areas? With the population growth in the area more patients are in need of our services and we need some help to help them and their families. Would you like to join as a volunteer? We would like to open a pop-up shop in Mangawhai Village from mid-December to late February to build awareness of hospice work and some additional income to sup-port our activities. We need volunteers to run it. Would you join us at our proposed shop? Training for the pro-posed shop will take place onsite in Mangawhai. Shifts are morning, afternoon or all day. Volunteers, both men and women young and old, from 15 years upwards are most welcome. General fitness is important as there is some moving of stock, as is being a people person and confidence with money. Our volunteers find working in our shops fun as they become community sharing spaces that sell such a range of valuable goods. Then there’s our community team, for which training takes place at the Whangarei hospice in Tikipunga, enabling hospice volunteers to provide care and support at home. This includes community visiting and outings, life reflections service, fundraising events, nurturing touch through palliative massage, gardening and other tasks that become known once the patient is on hospice’s books. North Haven Hos-pice provides palliative care for those with a life-limiting illness. Funding from the Northland District Health Board covers approximately 60 percent of our annual operating costs with the remainder coming from our hos-pice shops, donations, bequests, fundraising events and grants. We provide education programmes across North-land. In 2012-2013 North Haven Hospice cared for 508 patients and made 3,700 visits to patients living in the community. „ Do you have a heart for Hospice? Volunteers please contact Jane Scripps, Manager of Volunteer Services, janes@northhavenhospice.org.nz, (09) 437 3355 or 021 921 463. From Jane Scripps, North Haven Hospice |
