Artists open homes and galleriesArtists open homes and galleriesMangawhai’s upcoming Labour Weekend Art Trail will feature 40 artists displaying their works at 12 venues throughout Mangawhai Village and The Heads. Spend the whole weekend or just a couple of hours browsing through the artists gallery, studios, homes and gardens. Mangawhai and all its magic is rendered on canvas, created out of wood, sculptured in stone, woven in flax, molded in clay, created from metal with precious and semi-precious stones, textiles knitted, painted upon or just made exquisitely. All this and much much more. Maps of the venues exhibiting art works can be found online, at the Mangawhai Museum or on the day at any venue displaying the distinctive pink flags. For more information go to the Mangawhai Artists Association website www.mangawhaiartists.co.nz. ■ Art Trail, Mangawhai, Sat Oct 26 and Sun Oct 27, 10am–4pm. Artist self-taught PROFILE: One of the many artists displaying her work at the Mangawhai Artists Art Trail is Rachel Lowrie (pictured), who at the recent Gilmore Brown Kiapara Art Awards won a highly commended for her acrylic on board painting. Rachel is a self-taught artist and has never known a time when she hasn’t had a pen, pencil or paintbrush in her hand. After leaving school she trained in film and television, working on a major television show, music videos and short films. Recently she discovered the joys of working in bright, bold colours and has combined them with an iconic graphic style that still captures the level of detail that she finds endlessly fascinating in the natural world. |
