Waipu Cove well catered for

two fish cafe 1(copy)Is it an eatery? Is it a diner? Is it a restaurant? No, but in fact, yes, to all three – and more.

At Waipu Cove, Two Fish Cafe is a family cafe by day and a bistro by night starting with brekkys and brunches, and ending with dine in or take out. The remodelled bar will serve drinks, snacks and counter meals with the evening giving way to fine dining.

Two Fish Cafe might sound a little cryptic but this is how it works: It’s about food, it’s about a seaside location and while it’s not as miraculous as it’s biblical counterpart, the loaves are prepared in the open kitchen and baked in the oven inside, along with gluten-free pizza and burgers, and a variety of cakes and pastries and you can see your meal being prepared.

The Two Fish team is headed by Trent and Teresa Warren, whose ability in quality food follows them from the Waipu Beach House restaurant, ably assisted by Anita and Emma, two other faces familiar to locals.

Two Fish is a building with 60 years of colourful history and any local who can add to it’s colourful story are invited to impart their knowledge and memories to new owners.

From it’s days as ‘Do Duck Inn’ it has seen a number of owners and remodels, many of whom have understandably found it difficult to run such a business long term given the vagaries of a small seasonal seaside location. Nowadays such spots are much more accessable thanks to very mobile tourists, school holiday nomads, weekenders and well sealed roads.

Over summer it’s an all-day every-day beach place to hang out,” says Trent. “We’re looking to create a relaxed family atmosphere which is the epitome of beach life for visitors campers and locals.

“We have a kids play area and also a special wholesome kids menu which includes lasagne, and fish and salad dishes. A novelty ice cream cart is on the way in anticipation of a long hot summer, and some special and unique holiday evening entertainment is also in the plans.”

Given the profile of TV cooking, Trent intends utilising the open kitchen by involving local schools and schoolkids with food nutrition preparation and education in the new year.

■ Two Fish Cafe is presently open Thursday-Sunday but will be 7 days from Labour Weekend.

ATMOSPHERE: The open kitchen is a feature of the Two Fish Cafe.
