Mangawhai Bowling Club NewsCoach training at Kensington
Three bowlers from Mangawhai have taken on training to become bowling coaches. Murray Heaton and Gerry Mulligan from MBC and Jane Walker from MWBC travelled to Kensington BC August 22 & 23 and were put through two days of tutoring by Bowls NZ coaching trainer Kaushik Patel on the theories of coaching beginner bowlers. All three got through the two days very well and now have to put in 20 hours of practical coaching each. They will sit some exams over the coming weeks. Winter Closing Day Wellsford Closing of winter bowls at Wellsford saw four Mangawhai teams in the first four placings with only one end or one point between them. Kauri Bowl Trophy, Sat Aug 29 The Northland Charter Clubs Triples Tournament is an annual event, members of any Charter Club in Northland can enter. Mangawhai Club Inc had 8 teams at this years tournament played on Maungaturoto Country Clubs two bowling greens – 24 teams took part. The Mcullam Green was won by a comp team of John Wintle, Peter Cullen, and Gary Elmbranch. B Green was won by Mangawhai team Colin Wintle, Graham Wintle, and Diane Goldsmith. They were the overall winners on the day taking the Kauri Bowl Trophy. Holliday Shield Challenge, Sun Aug 30 The Holliday Shield is played for each year by three Northland and four North Harbour clubs who each enter a team of four bowlers, playing one round of 4’s, a round of triples and singles, and a last round of two pairs. The tournament is held each year at the club which won the previous year. Mangawhai, Maungaturoto, Leigh, Wellsford, Warkworth, Omaha, and Mahurangi East bowling clubs took part. The shield was presented by Warkworth Hotel publican Harry Holliday on March 3, 1956. Maungaturoto were hosts for the 2015 tournament. Winners were Mangawhai BC Fours (S) Graham Wintle, Ron Heaton, Wayne Williams, Neville Franks; Singles Neville Franks; Triples (S) Graham Wintle, Ron Heaton, Wayne Williams; Pairs (S) Graham Wintle, Wayne Williams, and (S) Ron Heaton, Neville Franks – they won all games and finished with a score of 10 points, and differential of +80 which pleased new selector for club teams 2015/16 Neil Hibbert. Have A Go Bowls The Club extends a welcome to all non-bowlers to Have A Go and try their hand at outdoor bowls for a couple of hours. Put the date and time in your diary. Simply turn up on Saturday October 3 at 9.30am to register. Session from 10am-12pm. Wear mufti and flat soled shoes. Bowls are provided. Coaches and regular bowlers will be there to help. Business house bowls Starts again Tuesday October 20, ponsored by Bruce Beal Ray White Real Estate. Limited to the first 48 teams. Cost is $75 per team of three players includes use of greens and bowls. Arrive 5.30pm-5.45pm play starts at 6pm for one hour each night. Runs for 8 weeks.
