Waipu Celtic shed on the riseThe Waipu Celtic Barn has started construction with the main floor being poured by a team from Bream Bay Concrete, donating their time for free as have many of the contractors involved in the job. The project could not have got to this stage without the generous support of the local community.
Among those, Paul Jenkins dug and compacted foundations, and timber has been supplied by Paul Wickham from BBS Timber, Whangarei. To date around $450,000 has been donated to the Waipu joint venture by way of cash or services. “The $1.5 million project is still a little short on funding but we are hopeful of support from the ASB Community Trust though we will not know the outcome of this until mid-November,” says spokesperson Juanita McGoldrick. “We recently received a grant from the Oxford Sports Trust which was of great assistance and fundraising will continue within the community. We are also working closely with suppliers to continue to keep the price within our means.” Major funding has come from a Lotto grant ($515,000) and the Whangarei District Council ($600,000) with a sizeable amount from community efforts. The very best of efforts will see the building finished in time for the annual New Year’s Day celebrations. in the past the Caledonian Society have used the Waipu Hall as their base but this will be their own ‘club rooms’ and though some of the finishing may be incomplete the ‘Celtic Shed’ will be completed to a usable standard. Trigg Construction is the contract builder, and Darrell and Marlene Trigg have been extremely generous in their support of the project. Pre-cast walls were erected last week. |
