Breast cancer street appeal needs local volunteers

The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation needs enthusiastic locals to help with its Pink Ribbon Street Appeal on Friday October 11 and Saturday October 12.

Whether you want to sign up for your own two-hour stint, or rope in friends, workmates or your community group to cover several hours, the NZBCF would love your assistance.

Volunteers will be part of the 7500-strong “pink army” of collectors raising money on the streets of New Zealand.

Their efforts will fund life-saving awareness and education programmes, research into new targeted treatments, support for women going through breast cancer, and the new 0800 BC NURSE advice line.

“Breast cancer is the number one cancer for Kiwi women of all ages – we need your help to win our fight to reduce the number of women dying from it,” says Van Henderson, chief executive of the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

Around 2800 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in New Zealand – one in nine women will be diagnosed over the course of their lifetime – and more than 600 will die.

The annual Pink Ribbon Street Appeal is the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation’s single biggest fundraiser, and is the most visible of its events in October, which is Breast Cancer Month.

“October is a great time to remind women to be breast aware, to look after their own health,” says Van Henderson. “This year, we’re urging women to know all the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, so they can report any suspicious changes to their doctor. It’s more than just a lump.” To volunteer for the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal, visit www.takeaction.org.nz or phone 0508 105 105. For more information about breast cancer signs and symptoms, which can include changes to the skin and nipple, check out the interactive e-guide at www.nzbf.org.nz.

PRETTY IN PINK: Media personality Helena McAlpine, who has secondary breast cancer, is fronting the 2013 Pink Ribbon Street Appeal.
