Kindy and Marae create partnershipAround 40 Mangawhai Kindergarten children and their whanau were welcomed on to Oruawharo Marae on September 4. Local maori primary school Te Kura Kaupapa O Oruawharo performed the official powhiri and the local kohanga reo also attended the day to support and welcome the kindergarten teachers and families. Activities during the day included teaching the children harakeke (flax weaving), poi making, fried bread, pikitia (etching pictures), tukutuku (traditional art) and of course lots of waiata. All families donated food items for a well appreciated hangi which was a highlight of the day. This has been what is hoped to be a beginning of a great friendship and relationship between the kindergarten and local marae. The kindergarten is planning to return the favour and invite Te Kura Kaupapa to their kindergarten in the near future. Kindy mother Natalie Richards organised and connected the kindergarten with the marae. She is also spending time every week teaching te reo and tikanga maori to children and teachers at the kindergarten, strengthening the bicultural programme. |
