Set net rules need explaining to someThis time of year, as the weather slowly but sure-ly warms up, we are seeing a rise in the number of people out targeting mullet and flounder in the Mangawhai area.
Our local Honorary Fisheries Officers (HFO) have found an number of nets left high and dry, as well as nets that are breaking the rules by cov-ering off more than a quarter of the waterways in which they are set. As such we thought it was worth reminding people of the rules and set netting.
Scallop season open The scallop season is upon us, opening on September 1. The season will run through until March 31 and it seems timely to remind fishers and divers about the rules around sorting their catch.
The obligation to sort and count your catch arises when you legally “take” the shellfish. You should count and measure shellfish at the first reasonable opportunity, which when using scuba is on the seafloor as the shellfish are placed in the dive bag. However, free divers do not have as much time to measure shellfish on the seafloor so it is reasonable to expect them to do this at the surface. Further information For further information about fishing rules and limits visit www.fish.govt.nz. Or get up-to-date fish-ing rules with the free MPI fishing app by texting 'app' to 9889 or visiting www.fish.govt.nz/en-nz/ MFish+Apps/default.htm MPI relies on community support to report poach-ers and rule breakers. Public information is critically important to what we do, so if you suspect something we urge you to report it. Whether people acting suspi-ciously at the beach, at the pub, or online – if it looks dodgy, we want to know about it. Ministry for Primary Industries ask the public to report any suspicious activity in our fisheries by phoning 0800 4 POACHER (0800 476 224). All calls are kept strictly confidential. |
