Generous locals dig deep for cancer supportWe have all been affected cancer, di-rectly or indirectly. Statistics say cancer is the leading cause of death in New Zea-land, accounting for around 30 percent of all deaths.
Diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years ago, Dorothy Freeman wanted to help the Cancer Society in some way. What began as a morning tea at her own place has grown to over 130 this year at Mangawhai Golf Club. A morning of fun and laughter including raffles and bingo saw $3,400 raised. “Mangawhai people dig deep each year to support this worthy cause,” says Dorothy. “They could be the most generous in New Zealand!” Raffles, collections, donation boxes, bingo and morning tea meant the Mangawhai and Kaiwaka area raised an incredible $8,600 in total. Dorothy is quick to point out she is only the coordinator and appreciates a hard-working support team including Val and Rob Cleaver, Bill and Judy Butterfield, Su-san Eggerton, Neville and Nicolette Franks, Jean Goldschmidt, Maxine McDonald, Pat Scott, Lynda Samson, Julia Sutherland, Ted Tuffey, Sonia, plus Gay Young and her band of helpers in Kaiwaka. Thanks goes to all sponsors, Mangawhai Golf Club, all those who braved the elements to man collection points at Kaiwaka and Mangawhai, and those businesses that had a collection box. And a ‘special’ thanks to the Village service station for their rolling raffles, raising $400 during the month of August. Dorothy and her mighty band of help-ers will be back again next year – the last Wednesday in August. If you have any ide-as give her a call on 431 5950. |
