Is it spring?

He’s no weather forecaster but Neville Dowson of Dey St reckons spring is here – and with good reason. On September 1 he picked his first tomato of the season.

“Self-sown, never covered at all and in a miserable two months of weather,” says Neville. Somehow this beast thrived through thick and thin and is bearing good sized fruit and producing a fine array of flowers as well. Neville came by the seed from a friend of a friend so its origin, though uncertain, is very likely an old hardy breed.

Certainly a keeper.
