A golden touch for cancerIt is now nine years since Dorothy Freeman rallied a group of helpers in raising funds for cancer treatment for Daffodil Day, now a major fundraiser throughout the country.
“It’s essentially a fundraiser and people are most generous for this great cause,” says Dorothy, “but we have to keep inventing new types of entertainment to make it an interesting and fun event.” This year about 125 people arrived at the Mangawhai Golf Club for a morning tea and Bingo. Prizes included hampers of groceries donated by Pam's Products, wine from Lochiel Wineries and the Mangawhai Golf Club, vouchers from Harvest Café and Sharkey Catering, flowers from Heidi Wellsford, Plants from Rowan at the market, coffee from Rush Coffee and products from Avon. Thanks to volunteers and the golf club for once again hosting the morning tea, Mangawhai was able to donate a grand total of $8000. The Grocery Grab raffle, sponsored by John and Heather Rankin of Molesworth Four Square, was a great success with $1500 raised for cancer. The winner of the $500 Grocery Grab was Liz Cameron. Second and third prize $100 grocery vouchers (also donated by Molesworth Four Square) were won by Norm McKenzie and Talia Pakinga. Liz Cameron’s Grocery Grab will take place at the Molesworth Four Square, Wood Street, Mangawhai at 2pm on Monday September 16 so everyone is welcome to come along and support her in her 90 second dash. WINNERS: Pictured are Liz Cameron, Norm McKenzie, John Rankin (Molesworth Four Square), Talia Pakinga, and Dorothy Freeman (local Daffodil Day co-ordinator). |
