Did you Know..........

 Grocery Grab for Liz
Winners a-plenty in Mangawhai this past week, with Daffodil Day heading the list. A record $8000 raised through the community morning tea, daffodil sales, and the big Grocery Grab raffle. Liz Cameron will be racing around Molesworth Four Square with her trolley for a 90 second 'grab' on Monday September 16, at 2pm – you are welcome to come and watch! One hundred dollar grocery vouchers, courtesy of Molesworth Four Square, were won by Norm McKenzie and local mum Talia Pukinga. The grocery grab raffle was drawn, under supervision, at The Club, using their random number selection machine. All very professional. Dorothy Freeman, chief organiser of Mangawhai Daffodil Day activities is also a winner in our community!

St John gets top votes
Westmoreland Homes have been giving viewers of their show home on Molesworth Drive throughout August, the opportunity to vote for a local charity. St John received the most votes, and Westmoreland will be donating $1000 to the Mangawhai organisation. A generous gift indeed.

Silver Hill takes gold
Oliveti Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards for 2013 were held recently and local entrant Silver Hill Olive Estate received 2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze award, capping it all off with Best in Class  for their medium blend koroneiki/asca. Have a taste at the Saturday morning village market.

Island trip builds experience
Sarah Clark, daughter of Barry and Jan, has recently returned from a study trip to Kiribati. Sarah teaches at Mahurangi kindergarten in Warkworth which is attended by a number of children from Kiribati families. Along with two colleagues, she was hosted by families, worked in the kindergartens, and now has a greater understanding of their teaching and learning. 'To build human bridges' was the theme of their study trip, and Mahurangi Kindergarten has put together a PowerPoint presentation to share with those interested. Contact the kindergarten on 425 7096.

Help fire service stop the rot!
Not such good news for the Mangawhai volunteer fire service. Their leaky building on Wood St is deteriorating badly with the upstairs now cordoned off for health and safety reasons. Chief fire officer Maurie Doughty says they are still operating of course, but big changes are required, and these ultimately come down to money for relocation and a new building. The call is out for volunteer firefighters – Natalie from the Frog & Kiwi has already started training – and the fundraising drive through scrap metal collection is still flourishing. Labour Weekend will be the start of a big campaign, so be prepared!

People needed for planting
Mangawhai riparian planting group has recently put in their second lot of native trees at an address in Devich Road. They are hoping for a better summer this year for rapid growth to attract birds, and to stop erosion and flooding of the little creek nearby. Last year's planting is looking good, although the drought did take its toll. During the coming year the group would like to attract more people to join to help out in this most important part of protecting our environment, namely preventing the silt flowing into the harbour thus feeding the mangroves, and encouraging native fish to return. If you would like to be part of this enthusiastic team, contact Jane Vaughan 4314 828.

Bird report from Sioux
The Black swan pair on The Sanctuary lake have some rather gorgeous fluffy cygnets following them around. A white heron – kotuku – has been seen in the late afternoons in paddocks on Settlement Road, foraging with a white-faced heron. Fantastic sight. There have also been six pelicans enjoying the hospitality of Waipu estuary. They may just call in to Mangawhai again…

Local artists take awards
Several local artists were recipients of awards in the Gilmore Brown Kaipara Community Art Awards, now showing at the Matakohe Kauri Museum.

Wendy Clifford took 2nd place in the Photography and Printmaking section, with Barry Clark 3rd.

Lorna Keen won 2nd prize with her painting Face of Labour, Alene Featherstone was awarded 3rd in the Painting and Drawing section, Rachel Lowrie receiving a highly commended.

In the Wood section, Aaron Ellis-Smith was placed second, jewellery maker Donna Shadick was third in the Adornment section, with Joanna Roberts placed 2nd in the 3Dimensional category.

Generous sponsorship is ensuring the success of this prestigious event, and thanks, plus support, must go to lead sponsor Gilmore Brown, business advisors and chartered accountants of Whangarei, along with Mike McGarry Coastal A1 Realty, Peter Fredricsen of Materials Processing Ltd, Westmoreland Homes Mangawhai, and Lifestyler News of Dargaville.

Te Whai Bay wines treated everyone at the gala opening, accompanied by Echo Valley Olives, and Kaiwaka Cheese. The exhibition is open through to the end of September, entry is free, and if you are an Otamatea resident you also have free entry to the Kauri Museum exhibits. Make a day of it.
