Hard work pays off for National ChampsMaungaturoto’s womans squash team exceeded all expectations by winning their division at the recent D Grade Squash Nationals in Tauranga.
The Carters Maungaturoto-sponsored team pulled off a stunning overall upset after being seeded 8 in a 10 province competition but coming out on top. Six months of game preparation paid off in hard fought battles against Henderson, Cambridge, Geyser City, and Mount Maunganui, before taking out the finals against Palmerston North. “Fitness paid off in the end as the girls found the inner strength to overcome all the pains and strains of the week,” buzzed team manager Mike Schimanski. “We encountered it all – blood, sweat and tears of joy.” Fundraising for the trip included a successful It’s in the Bag evening. “Thanks to main sponsors Gib, Carters Maungaturoto and Maungaturoto Motorcycles who got us there looking so professional.” ON TOP: National champs from left Michelle Schimanski, Mirna Manuell, Karina Allen, Mel Coates, Mike Schimanski (manager), Terri Donaldson, Fiona Hailes, Susan Devoy (four times world champion), Phillip Tana.
