More sightings of unusual fishFollowing our story last issue from Peter Farrell on the discovery of a sea serpent on a Mangawhai beach, several other local sightings have come to light. Waipu man Roland Morrison reports having discovered one earlier in the year at Rainbow beach, Bream Tail. Local scribe Sandra Bogart, who lives just on the Waipu side of Waipu Cove, photographed another which had obviously been hung up over a DoC sign on the beachfront near her property. There doesn’t appear to be a lot known about the serpent eel as it seems to be a shy fish which burrows itself into the sandy or muddy sea bed, but has been found in depths up to 300 metres from the western Mediterranian and western Pacific to the north eastern areas of New Zealand. - PHOTO/Sandra Bogart. |
