Trio ready to defend titleThree Mangawhai locals are looking forward to defending their team title at the upcoming Mangawhai Triathlon. Competing as ‘Been There, Done That’ Adam Strong, Mark Rowbotham and Shane Hughes took out the title in 2013 and are throwing down the gauntlet to other teams this year.
The event consists of a 500 metre swim or a 1.5km kayak, a 20km cycle and a 5km run making it ideal for those who have never competed in a triathlon before, or for those who would like to do only one discipline. New to the 2014 event is an option to enter one discipline – swim/kayak, cycle or run – and the organisers will put you into a team to complete your chosen discipline. The Mangawhai team are not giving away any of their training strategies, however they are quietly confident of repeating their win in 2014. They would love to see more local teams entering the event and challenging them for the title. The Mangawhai Triathlon will be held on Sunday February 16, and is the first of three triathlons organised by Sport Northland. The other two are the Kumara Triathlon to be held at Kai Iwi Lakes on March 29 and the Ray White Allens Kid’s Triathlon to be held in Whangarei on March 22. Full details on all triathlons is available at www.northlandtri.co.nz. Discounted/early bird entries for the Mangawhai Triathlon close February 2, with all entries closing February 12.
